Open Call – Apparitions

An open call on the theme of ‘apparitions’, traces, spectres, visitants, vestiges, reoccurrences, memories, re-visions. 

We are looking for text and visual material [creative and critical writings, photography, artworks, poetry, projects, documents, research] that call upon the theme of ‘apparitions’ conceptually and/or aesthetically. Selected submissions will be collected into a print publication. 

An apparition can be described as an unusual or unexpected sight, the act of becoming visible, something you believe, imagine or dream you see, the appearance of a star or comet after being obscured, an encounter with the ghostlike, the phantasmal, the supernatural. 

Broadly, an apparition could be a re-vision of something passed, a future folding into the present, acknowledgment of shared memories that shape contemporary infrastructures and cultural imaginaries, an untethering from temporality. 

The theme is open to broad and creative interpretation.

We are particularly interested in submissions that conjure the political potential of apparitions. How can the apparitional open tears in the fabric of dominant ideas and structures and summon alternate memories and possibilities?

Who we are

Tent is a group of practice-researchers, cultural workers, artists, teachers and writers who graduated from the MA in Art and Politics at Goldsmiths, University of London. We occasionally come together to read, watch films and discuss ideas about the intersections of art and politics. Our research interests span critical ecologies, decoloniality, technology, image politics, memory work, and spatial practice.
